Splicing

Splicing produces a fastening point, which has strength of up to 90% of the unspoiled rope when completed correctly. Splices should be inspected regularly to ensure that the rope eye has no movement i.e. if clean rope appears, it is recommended you seek professional advice from a rigging specialists.

Core only eye splice

Core only eye splice is used when a fixed eye is required in the end of a core. Only rope such as Dynex or a double braided rope where part of the cover has been removed. Often a rope coat is applied as extra protection.

Covered eye splice

Covered eye splice is used where a fixed eye is required in a end of a double braided rope (core & cover).

Joining splice

A joining splice can be used for a number of reasons listed below:

  • Adding a Dyneema tip to a Vectran rope
  • Extending or replacing an existing rope
  • Making a continuous loop
Splicing cover in core splice

Splicing a cover into a core is required when the core of a double braided rope is exposed and tucked back into the core. This is used for a number of applications listed below:

  • Making full racing halyards, where only required cover if left on reducing weight and windage
  • Spinnaker sheets
  • Halyard ends (Dyneema tips)
Joining two covers splice

Joining two covers is used where two covers either the same or different types are to be joined with no hard points and maximum strength. This splice is used in the mainsheet splice and also when DR chafe guard is added to a rope, i.e. the end of a spinnaker halyard.

Mainsheet splice with Technora cover

Ropeable Ropes & Splicing have developed a means of splicing a mainsheet continuously with little diameter increase, using 100% Technora cover that is thinner than standard covers. This provides similar durability performance.

Mouse loop

A mouse loop is a soft eye spliced into the end of a double braided rope cover. This provides a low load-bearing eye that a mouse line can be easily attached to. Mouse loops are also used to finish the ends of double braided rope so they don’t untwist. (Mouse loops should not be used for high load applications).
